Read on to discover more about the type of cleaning we do and why.
By far the most popular and most common
method of cleaning carpet
is the extraction or steam cleaning method.
We have all seen the big trucks with the hoses running into the house.
While these trucks appear to do an adequate job, there are some major
problems associated with this type of cleaning.
To begin with,
the carpets can
often take several days to dry allowing bacteria to build under the carpet and
in the padding. Many steam cleaners
press customers to pay extra for deodorizers not for the sake of deodorizing the
carpet as much as to hide the smell of the bacteria growth.
In most cases, if you refuse the extra charge they will deodorize it
anyway to cover the smell. In
addition, traffic on the carpet during this time can cause the carpet to stretch
and ripple requiring you to have to soon get someone in to restretch and reapply
it.
Secondly,
while the process is
commonly referred to as "Steam Cleaning", in actuality it is done with
pressurized hot water and not steam. To actually
use pure hot steam on your carpet would virtually destroy it.
Finally,
the percentage of soil
removal is not nearly as high as most people think.
The pressurized water does a fairly good job of rinsing the soiling from
the carpet fiber. The problem is the
pressure also pushes that soiling to the base of the carpet fiber and the vacuum
power is not enough to draw it back up and out of the carpet.
It was found in tests run at the behest of Consumer Reports that even the
best steam cleaners could not get more than 50% of the soiling out of a carpet.
The average was closer to 25%. In essence, as much as 75% of the soiling
is still deep in your carpet when the job is done even though the very top of
the carpet fiber looks clean. This
is why steam cleaners often recommend you clean your carpet 2-3 times a year and
it is also why spots seem to return a short while after a steam cleaning.
Most other common methods of cleaning get
even poorer results. Small
rental units generally remove no more than 10% of the soiling.
The main point to remember here is the wear and tear inflicted on your
carpet by this soiling. With the
dirt still deep in your carpet, the fiber begins to degrade due to the abrasion
caused by walking on this soiling and it can literally cut the life of your
carpet by as much as 75%.
What is the right way to clean carpet?
TechDirect uses only the dry-foam method of carpet and upholstery
cleaning. It also is a cooperative
effort between your technician and you, the homeowner.
First of all, your carpet is vigorously vacuumed to remove as much loose
soil as possible while it is dry and easily removed.
Then your carpet is virtually scrubbed clean using a specifically
designed dry-foam agent which cleans your carpet all the way down to the base of
the fiber. The dry-foam agent
contains heavy-duty surfactants and suspension agents to trap soiling as well as
high-powered enzymes to literally digest oil base stains within your carpet. The carpet
never takes more than 3-4 hours to dry which allows you to use your carpet much
sooner without fear of damage.
The next step belongs to you,
the
homeowner. The suspension agents
left in your carpet are light and should be vacuumed away within 72 hours after
the job is completed. If this
procedure is followed, in excess of 90% of the soiling is completely removed.
You will discover you can generally wait 2 to 3 times longer to get your
carpet recleaned, depending on the specific environmental conditions in your
home, and not only that but your carpet will last 3 to 4 times longer.
Most reputable dry-foam cleaners will deodorize your
carpet as a part of the process in order to neutralize odors in your carpet and so your home smells clean and bright for
weeks after the job.
So there are your choices.
How much of the soiling should be removed from your carpet when you pay
good money to have it cleaned? We
think "as much as possible" and we do everything we can to insure it's done correctly.
There is one thing you should consider when choosing a carpet cleaner and why you should choose Tech Direct. Throughout our 20+ year history, the story is always the same.
